Woodbridge Pet Vaccinations

Core Vaccinations for Cats & Dogs

Vaccinations are just as valuable to animals as they are to humans. Vaccinating your pet will not only keep them healthy, but it will also ensure you and your family aren’t at risk for animal diseases that can be transferred to humans such as rabies and Lyme disease.

There are two types of vaccines for pets: core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are the immunizations that every pet should receive, while non-core vaccines are recommended for pets on a case-by-case basis depending on their needs.

At Crossroads Animal Care Center, we offer a variety of vaccinations for cats and dogs in Woodbridge. Our experienced veterinarians can tell you what vaccinations your pet needs and when they need them.

If your pet hasn’t been vaccinated, call us today at (703) 972-5927 to schedule an appointment.

When to Vaccinate Your Pet

It’s a good idea to vaccinate your pets as early as possible. Many vaccinations can be performed in the early stages of life. While some vaccinations are a one-and-done deal, others will require a booster after a year or several.

Core canine vaccinations:

  • Rabies – Can be administered in the first three months of life. Rabies vaccines require a booster every year, or every three years, depending on the type of vaccine used.
  • Distemper – Can be administered between 6 to 16 weeks of age at 3 doses, or in 2 doses after 16 weeks. Puppies will need a booster after the first year, and then additional boosters every 3 years.
  • Bordetella – The time to get this vaccine will depend on the type of vaccine used. Annual boosters are recommended, or 6-month boosters for dogs that live in high-risk environments. Show dogs and dogs staying in boarding facilities are at a higher risk.
  • Lyme – It is recommended puppies get this as early as 9-weeks old, but adult dogs can and should receive it as well. Boosters recommended annually, particularly if your dog has a high risk of tick bites.
  • Leptospirosis – Recommended for 8-week old puppies, but can be done when older. Boosters recommended once a year.

Core feline vaccines:

  • Rabies – Should be administered as early as 8-weeks of old. We offer both 1-year and 3-year booster vaccinations (the type of vaccine used determines how often the booster is required).
  • Distemper – Can be administered at 6 weeks of age followed by additional doses every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks old, or 2 doses spaced 3 to 4 weeks when older (1 booster required after the first year followed by additional boosters every 3 years).
  • Feline leukemia – Can be administered as early as 8-weeks old with another dose 3-4 weeks later. Boosters required every 2 years.

Keep in mind that vaccines, groupings, and schedules vary for each pet; we customize a vaccine protocol for every patient we see.
